Background - I have been in consulting for 5 years, and I am looking to move to a strategy firm. I have an advanced degree from a top tier school. This book may have been written for undergrads or people who never met a consultant before. So, that is not me..but nevertheless, this book has issues.The first half of the book is not useful, unless you are still in college. He tells you to be nice, avoid wearing crazy clothes, try to make small talk (but not about your psychological issues), and have a firm handshake. You may encounter 1 of 4 (ridiculous caricature) "types" of consultants, so be "prepared". Then, he explains that the case will start after some brief conversation, then you'll do the case in a logical manner, then you need to wrap it up. Ok. Thanks. That's the first half of the book. 100 pages of time wasted. The frameworks are so basic that I cannot imagine anyone seriously using them (FRAME: Form a plan, Read the audience, Anchor a hypothesis, Mine for an answer, End the case - uh...yeah no kidding.). Also, he puts things in categories that are so massive, there's almost no point to have the categories. Categories are made to simplify things that share similarities. The "5 zones" (different types of cases) do not do that. The "Maximum Value Model" touted in other reviews is just a massive set of things to memorize in these 5 zones...which he then tells you not to memorize... after telling you how useful the MVM is (though no need to remember any of it?).He also contradicts himself regarding the depth of a case's answer. It makes no sense that "Bindu" somehow psychically predicts that there is a cost issue only (p.19) - basically ignoring all other factors presented. Her "hunch" is that they lost control of the costs... wow - sounds like someone taking a stab in the dark, given the info she had...but this is the right approach (hardly "mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive" as he recommends in the book). Then later, regarding the stuffed animal manufacturer's failure in Canada (p. 104), Ohrvall describes answer as being inclusive of dozens of factors (distribution channels, shelf space, sales staff compensation), never explaining why there is such a massive discrepancy in depth and breadth between the two. He does have a big section on depth and breadth, but then he never explains why and when to go deep / broad.There are many instances where he brings up questions and never gives answers. For example, "passengers are 10lbs fatter than last year...costing airlines money...what would you do?" That's it. There is no suggested framework or answer. I actually googled this to see if I could find some direction, and there are people with advanced math training (and aerospace engineering experience) explaining how to calculate this - and the complexity of it is beyond anything that any case interviewer would ever give. But, he never gave the answer, so maybe I am missing something very simple.Now - onto the online stuff (and the further lack of answers). He has a ton of free 2-minute videos which are basically just repeats of what the content is in the book...so it irritates me that I bought the book and it's all free online. Second, there is no password in the book to unlock any more cases online. They're already all there - free - and I never had to buy this book to get anything online, except a written outline of the cases. He references an "answer key" in one of those videos, but I still have no clue where that is or why I don't have access to it (it's not in the book). Despite paying $26 for this book, I have no more access to online materials than someone who never bought it. In fact, I had to sign up for the online site just to get 2 free cases to walk through on his site. Also, I have no access to MBA Case math (another $39) that is mentioned. I should've just done the online stuff and saved money.The book might not be useless to someone who is 19 and interviewing for their first internship with a consulting firm, but otherwise I do not see the point. Even "Case in point" with its over-reliance on frameworks, has a better perspective on case interviews than this. This is basic, disorganized, and unfinished. I am not sure what the other reviewers found so useful, but then again, hardly any of them reviewed any other books or products...so...draw your own conclusions...
I'm a UCLA Anderson student going through consulting case interviews, so I of course have all 3 of the important ones but I found David Ohrvall's "Crack the Case System" to be the most bang for my buck -- great advice, really helpful resources (online case practice, well-done handouts & printables, etc), and approaches to case interviews that don't make you a robot. If you are looking to get into management consulting, I suggest getting this book FIRST. (Marc & Victor's are good too, but I wish I spent my time reading Ohrvall's first.)

The book takes you from understanding what case interviews are, through the important behavioral aspects of an interview, and finally through mastering the various types of cases (the vast majority of the book). It also provides various timelines that you can use to tailor your case prep, depending on how much time you have.David Ohrall splits up the cases into different types - Market Sizing, Case Starts, Mini Cases, and Full Business cases. As someone who has gone through the process of learning how to case before, it was useful to start at the beginning, and review each of these. Each builds on top of the previous ones, which helped me to both not forget what I had just learned, and to also further understand the concepts.I'm pleasantly surprised at the amount of focus that the book puts on understanding business situations rather than memorizing frameworks. I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking to learn how to case interview.

This is my go to book for case prep. Very engaging and nice example. The frameworks are easy to remember and universally applicable. Highly recommended.
